The Student of Year Guidelines
1. Write an essay explaining why it is important to continue their education by attending a college/university. The essays are evaluated and scored with a maximum of 20 points,
2. SAT scores, transcripts, and a list of documented extra- curricular activities are submitted. The scoring of this phase reaches a maximum of 30 points,
3. Students are required to sit and be interviewed by a panel. Questions asked generally focus on current events and cover national news issuse, local politics, and sports. Judges take into consideration knowledge, posture, poise, and grammar. This phase accounts for a maximum of 25 points,
4. The talent phase requires the student to display some sort of talent in a public forum. Performances range from but are not limited to musical instrument, recitals, vocals, dance, speech, and drama monologue. This phase acounts for a maximum of 25 points.
Typically the field of competition includes 7 to 10 students. The three top scores are recipients of scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $2000. The winner also gains a chance to compete in the same manner through (Georgia & South Carolina) competition. Should a student win at the regional level, he gains a chance to compete at the national level against students from the other 48 states.
All in all the Foundation seeks to highlight the importance of higher education and financially support graduating high school students in their educational pursuits.
